âWHATâS THAT?â
Conor tilts his head at my sketchpad, his brows furrowed as if thereâs something to understand about it. Itâs not that hard to figure out. Itâs a page consisting entirely of flowers, drawn when I had a spare hour away from Leonâs drill sergeant act to chill out in Callyâs garden. But maybe Conorâs expecting there to be a dragon hidden among the flowers, like Iâve secretly drawn some kind of optical illusion. Subliminal messages about dragons sounds like Conorâs idea of hell.
âJust an idea. Maybe for album art, or...â
Conor raises an eyebrow. âOr?â
Iâve never told anyone this. But... âI think Iâd kinda like to get a tattoo.â
Iâm not sure Conorâs eyebrows can travel any higher.
âAfter all this is gone, I mean,â I mutter, gesturing to my bandaged arm.
I was wrong: Conorâs eyebrows can go higher. âYou want it on your arm?â He sounds amazed, like the idea is somehow diabolical and heâs not sure if he likes it.
âYeah. Itâs something a lot of burns patients do down the line.â Instead of staring at tight pink raw flesh, why not turn your body into a wild canvas of art? Better to stun one way than the other.
But Iâm in a band of goody-two-shoes, and Iâm supposed to be the goodiest-two-shoes of the lot, so no wonder Conorâs staring at me that way. Only Leon has a tattoo and Iâm pretty sure heâs regretted it ever since. Tarek seems the type to decorate himself head to toe in ink, but he just isnât into them. Pretty sure he once called Leonâs tattoo an ugly abomination on top of an ugly abomination.
I sigh.
âFlowers, though,â Conor points out, looking semi-repulsed. âFlowers?â
âWhat?â In my mind, flowers represent beauty, growth, rebirth. If anything, the symbol is so obvious itâs entered Clichéville.
But Conor just mutters, âI donât know. I kinda think getting the garden of Eden tattooed on you would light up the Internet with crazy conspiracy theories.â
I hear his emphasis and roll my eyes. âYou know you made your own garden of Eden for Cally? You remember where we had our first proper kiss, right?â
He stares at me like heâs been struck. âIs that... Youâre not doing it because of me, are you?â
âWell, Iâm not doing it because of Adam, am I?â
Conor quiets at that. But then he adds in a funny voice, âIf you were getting a tattoo because of me, Iâd like it to be the words âConor was hereâ in my handwriting. Preferably somewhere more intimate.â
I snort. He actually would. Thatâs almost the problem.
âWhat are you two doing?â I hear the voice before I see him. Tarekâs lounging against the door of the warehouse, watching the two of us sharing a bed. I try to ignore the weird fuzzy warmth that runs across my skin like static. My most private carefree self is being studied and examined by someone who rarely gets to see it.
âUh, album art,â I say, flicking back a couple of pages to a collection of hearts I once tried to draw.
